Grade 7 is the introductory class of the lower secondary under the Kenya’s new CBE curriculum. At this level, learners are slowly adopting a practical based learning experience offered fully in grade 10 to grade 12.As a teacher of this level, you are required to have a clear understanding of syllabus requirements at the upper secondary level. This helps the learner to establish a clear career pathway. At the end of grade 7,students transition to grade 8,before finally siting for Kenya Junior School education assessment(KJSEA) offered at the end of grade 9.
Recommended teachings methodology for grade 7 learners
- IBL(Inquery based learning)
Learners at this stage have less concentration and therefore requires less talk. Trainers are encouraged to engage learners in open ended discussions to create a better learning experience and foster creativity within the learners.
- Practical based learning
Students learn through interactions with real world objects. Interacting with real world objects ensures that the learners acquires hands on skills on the subject matter. Make practical based learning a routine and see your learners enjoy the learning experience.
- Interacting based learning
Allowing learners to interact freely during learning allows exchange of ideas among learners, do this realizing that learners learn at different paces i.e. fast and slow.Interactive based learning also reduces monotony brought about by continuous teaching in the classroom.
- Tours and site visits
Tours and site visits are recommended for subjects like Geography and history to create a real world visual experience of what is normally taught in classes. If you teach Geography on land forming processes for example, taking them to places like Ngorongoro or Menengai crater would help them understand in detail the subject matter.
- Visualization and videos
Videos and other visual slides like PowerPoint also helps learners of grade 7 to gain better understanding of a particular learning area, they also make the learning experience interesting among the minors.
